Notes from Saturday at Home Depot

Saturday night in Carson, boxing was a main stream sport again. A great main event with a great star studded crowd. The 8,000 plus were in great form and cheered each round loudly. You could feel the electricity from the beginning and the following are the good and bad of what I saw at the fights last night.

The main event, wow! What an amazing show of courage and determination. Izzy is amazing and a must see anytime he fights. Marquez is a talented boxer with no shortage of heart.

Quick though about the venue. Home Depot Center has a habit of opening doors 15 minutes before the first fight. When you consider the lines waiting to go through security, you will miss a round or two and that is only if you hustle to get over to the stadium. Why not open earlier? As for saturday night, the idea of staging 3 fights after the main event was ridiculous. Why not have them at 3 or 3:30 and open doors at 2? You can still have a swing bout or two but get the fans ready and let them see the guys who are on the undercard. The first fight that many missed saw Tony Demarco in a war. The only entertaining part of the cavalcade of swing bouts was Pooh Bear’s trainer and his oft mocked clapping every 10 seconds of each round.

It is my opinion the loudest non main event cheers went to Julio Ceaser Chavez Sr. He was treated like a King as he entered the floor. That guy is money to Mexicans.

If this sport can get Jack and Sly to show up for more events the sport will only gain more fans and get better. It was truly beautiful to see Jack stand and clap for that scintillating round 4.

I thought round 12 epitomized the rivalry. When Vazquez needed it in two of the three fights, he found a way to get it done and with effect. Marquez is probably a better boxer but Izzy seems to hit harder and overcome any obstacle in the last two fights.

Should we see a 4? I don’t know if anyone knows yet. Both guys need time and tests to see if they display and signs of immediate effects from the damages they took. If they both pass the tests and take a year or so away from each other, why not? The sport has had its share of fighters going 4.

Kudos to Home Depot for the food and beer prices. The knockdown was legit in the 12th. The crowd was electric and even though it was cold, no one seemed to mind. Please, more great fights at Home Depot Tennis Stadium.

Whether you missed it or just want to see it again, SHOWTIME will re-air the instant classic Vazquez-Marquez III SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast in its entirety tonight, Tuesday, March 4 (SHO2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT) and Wednesday, March 5 (SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT).
